How would one determine an Englishman by sight only?

I won't go into the PC argument - sufficient to say that being ENGLISH and merely being the holder of a UK passport are enormously different. I see the passenger he killed was a Lithuanian - why on earth would he end up (literally) living in Melksham?

Yes - there are a shedload of "English" I'd like to "trade-in" for some immigrants.

You said it. "those who come here only to scam the benefit system and the general population." For example, an Iraqi asylum seeker. UN agreements are that these should seek asylm in the first safe country to which they come. UK is geographically one of the LAST countries they would reach, having crossed turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy or Autria, Germany, France ......to reach UK where the handouts are biggest.

I personally don't know of any foreign national who has come here purely to scam the benefit system. The Sun and the Daily Mail tell me there are many and there probably are. If so, then surely that is the fault of the system itself, not the person taking advantage of it.

People are responsible for their own actions. If they steal or scam it's because they choose to - which makes them criminals, not victims.
Like the foreign nationals who steal purses/bags from the elderly. The foreign nationals who carry out the gold jewellery scams. The foreign nationals who carry out insurance scams.
They aren't the victims - those they scam are - it doesn't matter if it's a person or a system they steal from.
(They don't live on the streets, either. They're housed and supported within days of arrival.)
They don't steal and cheat as a "second job" - that's how they "earn" their living.

Congrats on getting it correct!!! The Roman army, the finest major fighting force in history, arrived in 43 AD under Emperor Claudius, which means that given that it was 2000 years ago your "50-odd AD" is pretty much dead-on. So many people think it was with Caesar in 55BC - that was just a reconnaissance raid, and the resistance was such that it took a century to come back.

Yes, they were Celts, but the Romans called them all "Britons". I often try to imagine a Roman Centurion sitting in the sun on the terrace of his villa in Italy, wondering how to tell his wife they've been posted to Hadrian's Wall. (I know in theory they were not allowed to marry but in practice they did)
