Trowbridge honoured people at the heart of the county town in its annual Civic Awards.

Three awards were given out at the Trowbridge Town Council event, with representatives of twin towns Leer, in Germany, Oujda, in Morocco, and Elblag, in Poland, there to watch.

Kier Construction won the Enhancement Award for its work on Trowbridge Library, which opened last September, as part of the £22m refurbishment to County Hall.

The library is larger than its predecessor on the other side of Bythesea Road, and contains 40,000 books, with free WiFi access, self-service technology and a reference section.

Stephen Brook, project manager from Kier Construction, said: “We are so proud to be part of the boom in Trowbridge at the minute.

Former town clerk Doug Ross won the Civic Award, while the Friends of the Biss Meadows Country Park received an Outstanding Achievement Award for a pond renovation project.

Mr Ross, 72, who was clerk from 1991-2005, said: “It was a bit of a surprise. I had been asked to speak but I had no idea I’d won. It’s something that you expect others to get, not yourself.”

Mr Ross, who lives with wife Marjorie in Westwood Road, is a part of many organisations that benefit the town, from Trow-bridge Community Area Future Partnership to the Trowbridge Community Area Link.

Lance Allan, the current town clerk, said: “It was a fantastic event, there was good food, good company and the best turnout we’ve had for many a year.”
