A wordsmith living in Trowbridge has made a huge splash in a competition to become the new Bard of Bath.

Poet Mark Westmore, 27, of Marsh Road, who works as a lifeguard at the University of Bath, won the annual competition which this year was themed Waters On Our Land.

He becomes the 16th person to hold the position, each one selected by the annual competition’s judging panel.

Bath-born Mr Westmore, whose winning work was called The Rhythm, said:“I feel absolutely delighted to have been selected and aim to give something back in my new position.

“The local area is a big part of my life and inspiration for my work.

“I studied advertising at the University of Manch-ester, but when I came back I looked to savour the simpler things in life and I really enjoy being creative.”

Mr Westmore, who performed his competition piece using a drum, received robes and a handmade bardic chair as part of his elevation to the position of Bard of Bath.

During his reign, he will perform as part of the eight pagan festivals taking place across the region.

He said: “To be the new Bard of Bath truly is a great honour and I pledge to boost the people of the city and its morale by passing on my words of advice.”

He also plans more practical support: “I’ll also be handing out free cakes in the city and I want to give free tours of the Roman Baths in exchange for being allowed to write poetry by the sacred waters.”

The Bard of Bath competition has run since 1996.
