Call a halt to those nuisance phone calls

Do you ever get nuisance calls or texts? I get a lot, though the volume ebbs and flows.
Recently I’ve been getting calls on my mobile from a 0203 number which results in a recorded message or a person from a call centre which is clearly not in this country. As I’m self-employed and very active on the internet, it’s easy to inadvertently give my number which might then be sold on to third party without my knowledge. I accept this as a fact of modern life.
However, this same number has now started calling our house phone and my son answered it recently – and was very confused. For me, that crosses the line. I’m trying to teach my children a good telephone manner but picking up the phone and finding a silent call can be very frightening.
A range of measures is now being planned to tackle this issue. Regulators are to get more power to act, while cold callers will soon have to show their number – making reporting unwanted calls easier. A licensing system for call centres may also be introduced.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has produced a document called ‘Connectivity, Content and Consumers: Britain’s digital platform for growth’ which says nuisance calls can be live marketing calls, silent calls, abandoned calls and recorded marketing messages.
There will be a closer working relationship between Ofcom and the Information Commissioner’s Office to more easily share information around this issue.
- The Telephone Preference Service runs a service to opt out of unwanted calls. You can register free by visiting www.tpsonline.org.uk or calling 0845 070 0707. It takes 28 days to become effective.
- Mobile phone numbers can also be registered, although this will not prevent unsolicited text messages.
It is a legal requirement that all organisations do not make calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have the individual’s consent to do so.
