Double blow after post office closure in Dilton Marsh
8:00am Saturday 28th September 2013 in News
Villagers already braced for today's demise of their post office in Dilton Marsh now face a double blow, with their nearest alternative – in Westbury – shutting temporarily next month.
There was shock last week, after a notice announcing the permanent closure was put on the door of Dilton Marsh Stores, which has a Post Office counter. Both sections have been operating on reduced hours.
A petition was immediately set up by village residents to save the Post Office and convenience store.
Dilton Marsh Parish Council has written to the Post Office, but the closure will go ahead unless someone else takes over the shop.
It has now been revealed that the Post Office branch based at the Co-op store in Westbury is due to close for refurbishment from October 24 to November 1. The next nearest post offices are in Southwick and Warminster.
A Post Office spokesman said: “The Post Office is committed to providing a service to residents in Dilton Marsh.
“Options include finding a new operator and relocating the service, or the introduction of a hosted service, to operate from a community building or business, on set days.
“It is regrettable that the scheduled modernisation of Westbury Post Office will be of inconvenience to customers for whom it is their closest alternative to Dilton Post Office.”
Fairfield Farm College, in Dilton Marsh, provides residential courses for students with learning disabilities and often sets them tasks, such as taking mail to the post office.
Principal Janet Kenward said: “It helps students learn important life skills, which could eventually lead to employment.”
On a visit to the college last week, South West Wiltshire MP Andrew Murrison said: “It’s important for the students who can visit the post office to be able to do so. Losing a post office is huge loss for any small community.”
