Cancer sufferer James Shadwell is hoping to achieve his challenge of completing the Bath Men’s Walk tomorrow to raise money for Dorothy House Hospice.

Mr Shadwell, 32, was diagnosed with lung cancer in May 2013 and has had chemotherapy at Royal United Hospital in Bath every three weeks since then.

He will take part in the Bath Men’s Walk, during which fundraisers walk eight miles starting from Dorothy House Hospice in Winsley at 1pm.

The finish line for the walkers is at Bath’s Recreation Ground, where they will be rewarded with a pie and pint and get the opportunity to watch the Six Nations clash between France and England on a big screen.

The event, open to men and boys aged 12 or over, is in its second year and raises money for Dorothy House and Bath Rugby Foundation.

Mr Shadwell, a father-of-one from Fulfor Road, Trowbridge, said: “I decided to take part in November when I saw it on the Dorothy House website.

“It was the challenge of being able to do it, but also being able to support Dorothy House as a thank-you because they have supported me.”

The hospice has provided him with support since June 2013, with nurse visits, physiotherapy and counselling.

He added: “The work they do is invaluable.

“In terms of non-clinical it is the most important support I have had.”

Mr Shadwell, who worked at Clear Vision Accountancy Group in Corsham, will be joined by a group of 14 friends and family on the day.

“He has walked several sections of the canal in preparation for the event, but has yet to complete the whole eight miles.

He said: “I hope to be able to do it, but the key thing is to raise as much money as we can.”

Mr Shadwell and his fundraising team has already raised almost £2,000 for the hospice and hope that figure will keep on rising.
