Knees thanks customers

Bosses at HJ Knee are pleased with the support they have received from shoppers since the shop was moved from Trow- bridge town centre to the Spitfire Retail Park.

After 130 years the family firm left its Fore Street base and the new shop was opened by town crier Trevor Heeks on Friday.

Knees replaced the former Comet shop and will specialise in electrical goods, furniture and homeware.

The retailer downsized as it prepared for the move, closing its electrical store and partially closing its department store, which will remain open until it sells its discontinued and clearance stock.

Ian Vidler, retail director, said: “The vast majority of customers have been really pleased with the shop and its offering. We’ve encountered the odd gripe, but that is understandable. At the weekend we took the equivalent of what we’d usually take at the department and electrical store which is promising given we didn’t have too many offers or promotions.

“I’m sure this move will safeguard the future of the company for the next 20 or 30 years.”

The new store’s first customers were Bradford on Avon couple John and Josephine Barrett who received a bottle of champagne when buying a Dyson vacuum cleaner.

Mrs Barrett said: “We certainly hadn’t intended to be the first customers, so it was quite a shock. I think the shop is very nice and very well laid out and I wish them all the best for the future.”

The so called dying town centre has had loads of free publicity too, but has shown no signs of life yet.

I missed the opening, obviously Trevor was not crying loud enough.

Sorry to put a dampener on all the optimism but I was disappointed. I NEVER walked out of Knees with an empty basket. Whatever I went in for, I always found something else I didn't realise I needed, and left feeling well served.
I went in on opening day - five minutes later I left. I had seen enough - a miniature Leekes but with less choice. Such a shame.

I too was not impressed. One of the most boring tours of a shop I have ever undertaken. There is stii more life in the town centre than in this place.

Hackenbush tells us of a "dying town center (sic)". If so, it is a very busy dying town centre.

Flaggy describes the new Knees as a miniature Leekes. Excellent... I've been looking for a store that was just like Leekes, but smaller - and not so far away.

Went into knees today and was also very disappointed, the shop now looks like any other shop and it has lost all its character and charm. I have been shopping in knees since I was a little girl and was saddened to hear that it was moving out of the town. Knees used to be a place where you could get anything and everything sadly I don't think this is the case any more.

The new Knees does not look like any other shop. For example there are no sides of bacon, faggots or pork pies in evidence.
For the same reason it is also untrue that the old Knees sold anything and everything.

I visited yesterday, sadly same opinion, no bits and bobs or quirky items which you normally can't find elsewhere. So for me it didn't do the old store I was used to justice, very disappointed.

I never managed to buy a bicycle there.

I find it quite ironic that he/she should express his/her disappointment that Knees has changed so much considering the name he/she goes under on this forum.
