Horrendous weather played havoc with the Ten Tors event at the weekend, with teams from the three Wiltshire schools which entered all failing to complete the challenge.

John of Gaunt School in Trowbridge had two teams attempting to take on the 35 and 45-mile treks across Dartmoor over Saturday and Sunday.

Both failed to make it to the end.

The 35-mile team got to the fifth of the ten tors before they were forced to pull out after one member of the team suffered a knee injury.

The 45-mile team reached the seventh tor before navigational problems and an injury stopped them in their tracks.

The teams had received two new tents before the trek, following a donation from Medequip for £500, after employee Ian Richardson had offered to help the school out.

Humanities director of learning Stuart Gray, who was team manager, said: “Unfortunately, both teams were unsuccessful.

“Dartmoor Rescue group picked up the 35-mile team at about 8.30pm on Saturday.

“I’m proud of the way they handled the situation.

“The 45-mile team took the decision to drop themselves out as one member had an ankle injury and combined with a navigational failure they weren’t going to finish in time.

“Considering the conditions, I’m pleased they looked after each other well and didn’t have any serious issues.

“They were disheartened they didn’t finish, but they still made the school proud.”
