Westbury runner James Waugh and his family are taking part in the Great North Run on September 7, in aid of his terminally-ill brother.

Mr Waugh, 57, of Warminster Road, will be running the half-marathon with his partner Sarah Amey, 43, after his brother Ian was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given nine months to live.

Ian Waugh, a 66-year-old father of four, was born and raised in Westbury, but now lives in Llanelli, South Wales where he is a Methodist minister.

James Waugh, a maintenance engineer, and his partner will run alongside Ian’s son, Gavin Waugh, 27, who lives in Haydon Wick, Swindon.

Mr Waugh said: “Ian has always been a very giving person. He spent a great deal of his life in the RAF before he became a minister in the Methodist church.

“He learned the Welsh language to help him work in the communities giving guidance and support where he can.

“Wales is a country he has come to love and he is very much loved and respected in return.

“Doing the run is a way of helping people with pancreatic cancer for the future.”

James and Sarah are regular runners with the Westbury Harriers running club and both have completed marathons and half-marathons. They aim to raise £500.

Gavin is planning to raise £1,000 for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.

At present less than four per cent of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survive beyond five years.

James said: “Pancreatic cancer receives one per cent of cancer research funding in the UK, despite being the fifth most common cause of cancer death.

“We must help find a cure for this terrible disease.”
