Bradford on Avon great-grandmother Greta Wiltshire drowned in the River Avon after going missing from her home last April, an inquest has heard.

Mrs Wiltshire, 76, left her home at St Aldhelm Road, Bradford on Avon, where she lived with her husband Ted, some time after 10am on April 20 last year.

She was seen by a neighbour walking along the street in her nightclothes, and reported missing by her family at around 11.40pm that night.

Friends and neighbours joined police and WILSAR (Wiltshire search and rescue) in searching for her, but her body was discovered in the river the next morning at Greenland Mills.

At an inquest into her death at Salisbury Coroner's Court, Ian Singleton, assistant coroner for Wiltshire and Swindon, ruled out suicide as a likely cause of death, recording a narrative verdict.

He said: “On the evening of April 20, Greta Joyce Wiltshire left her home dressed in her nightclothes.

“She walked to the River Avon, and at a time and place unknown, entered the river in circumstances which remain unclear, and subsequently died of drowning.”
