Wiltshire West Cubs had a magical time at their District camp, held at The Wiltshire Scout Centre, Potterne.

A hundred Cubs from seven packs and 28 adults camped under canvas in lovely hot and sunny weather for the Harry Potter themed weekend.

They entered the campsite through a Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy gateway made by Ian Blair.

The weekend started with the Cubs being selected from the Sorting Hat into their houses, before they made cloaks, hats, wands and broomsticks, all decorated in true Cub style. They then went on to make a Hedwig owl wall hanging. Prizes and certificates were awarded for best Hedwigs to Thomas McLean, 1st Trowbridge, Alex Chapman, Warminster and Bengi Moreley, Broughton Gifford & Holt.

On Saturday morning there was a Hedwig Quest with the Cubs walking 4km and having to complete 20 quests. In the afternoon they made house badges, bookmarks, doorhangers, spells, potions, owl mail secret writing and spider cakes as well as constructing a boat out of cardboard to get across the moat into the school.

Quidditch was played next with all the Cubs gaining their Athletes badge and after a feast at the High Table came the Goblet of Fire, a good singsong with some amusing sketches.

On Sunday the Cubs had a Hogwarts Heroes Own event followed by a Triwizard Tournament to revive Professor Dumbledore from a ‘deep sleep’ with challenges of Fantastic Beasts, The Unicorn Den, The Welsh Dragon and The Leaky Cauldron.

Great fun was had by everyone especially retrieving the glass eyes from buckets of some very unsavoury mixtures and also getting wet.

After camp was struck certificates and badges were presented, including and Chief Scout Silver Awards, the highest award in the Cub section, to Warminster Cubs Joshua Cox, Oliver O’Callaghan, Sophie Killick and Hannah Mills and Westbury Cub Matthew Clinch. The camp was organised by ADC Chris Broom, Dave Smith from Bowerhill and Sally Tanner.
