Travellers on the A4 may may need to take their passports with them after villagers in Box voted for independence at the weekend’s Box Revels celebration.

The annual three-day event started with the traditional village banquet on the recreation ground, which this year included a campaign rally inspired by the forthcoming Scottish referendum.

Sunday saw an inter-pub cricket contest followed by a family barn dance, before the main fun day itself on Monday.

Organiser Mike Curd spent Monday morning decorating the recreation ground with flags for the new republic, designed by Box Primary School pupils. He said: “It was absolutely superb. The independence debate really took off, they said, why should Scotland be the only people who get to vote?

“When you see what the kids have done it’s just amazing. You get them in the spirit and it gets the whole village going.”

As well as the usual stalls and fairground attractions, this year’s Revels event included its own Highland Games and a car boot sale.
