Young entrepreneurs had their first proper insight into how to run a market stall on May 28, as part of a Teenage Market scheme run by Trowbridge Town Team.

The enterprise is being run as a free, first come, first served project and it is hoped it will become a sustainable part of Trowbridge Market life in the future.

As part of the pilot scheme, youngsters aged from 13-19 have a chance to run their own stall, where they can sell their own products and learn the sort of entrepreneurial skills they can use in the future.

A group of seven teenagers visited stalls including Pat’s Trading Post at the weekly market in Trowbridge on Wednesday to speak to stall holders and get ideas for their own stalls.

Chair of the Trowbridge Town Team David Baker said: “I’m getting lots of response from youngsters interested in being involved. I have been working with this particular group for the last five weeks.

“I wanted them to speak to market holders and get ideas so they can prepare for when they run their own stall in the teenage market.

“The first Teenage Market will now be held on October 18 when the Trowbridge Carnival takes place and we hope to have lots of stalls in Fore Street.”

In addition to the new market, Mr Baker is also offering a series of business workshops to give the participants a taste of The World of Work.

Youth development co-ordinator for Trowbridge Sam Shore said: “It’s a fantastic scheme and the young people who have been involved so far are really committed and are looking forward to the challenge.”

Jamie Pugsley, 15, from Melksham, said: “I wanted to do something a bit different and it’s been a great experience so far. I have already learnt some valuable business skills and I have lots of ideas for what I want to do.”
