A Winsley fundraising organisation is celebrating 25 years of hosting a safari supper in the village to raise money for some of the world’s poorest people.

The Winsley Village Project supports three charities: 45 per cent of its income goes to Just a Drop providing water for a Ugandan village; 45 per cent to Mercy Ships to operate a hospital ship, providing medical and surgical help to people in West Africa; and 10 per cent to Medecins Sans Frontieres, which gives immediate assistance to victims of natural or man-made disasters, and of armed conflict worldwide.

Since the organisation was founded in 1985, the village has raised more than £136,000. Nearly £28,000 of that sum has come from its annual safari suppers organised by Phillip and Elizabeth Bush, of Ashley Lane, and a committee.

They said: “We are delighted that these events have grown from our original one of 40 people, to about 100 taking part.

“The money has been so valuable, and it has helped to save many people’s lives”

Diners get three courses, each one in a different house, before all meeting in one house for coffee.

This year’s event is on Saturday June 28. Tickets cost £24. For details, contact Mr and Mrs Bush on 01225 866624 or email phillipbush08@btinternet.com.
