Bradford on Avon resident Alison Gaskell and her family had a unique bird’s eye view of Saturday’s scrapyard fire in Trowbridge, when they got up close to the smoke in a light aircraft.

Along with her 22-year-old son Peter she took these dramatic pictures of the blaze from her partner Bruce McNaught’s single propeller Piper Cherokee.

They took off from an airstrip in Marshfields, near Colerne, and snapped the pictures as they returned back from Gloucester.

She said: “I live near the old Beehive pub, so as the crow flies I could see the fire as soon as it started. As we were coming back we could see the fire was still going.

“We were right over it; we saw the really black smoke when we left home, but those flames were something else, really quite dramatic, and we could see it all the way from Gloucester when we took off.”

The fire at EJ Shanley’s scrapyard has been burning for more than 48 hours.
