Trade union members across Wiltshire are set to rally at County Hall, Trowbridge, on July 10 including firefighters, local government workers, and civil servants.

In a letter to parents and carers, St Laurance School headteacher Fergus Stewart and Bridget Bolwell, vice-chair of governors, say:

"As you are probably aware, the National Union of Teachers will be holding a day of strike action on Thursday 10th July to protest over a number of issues and proposed changes imposed by Government. At St Laurence, we have a significant number of teachers who are affiliated to this union.

"We have considered the situation very carefully, bearing in mind the impact of strike action on timetabled classes and the welfare of students, and have decided that we will be able to remain partially open on that day.

"School will be open as usual for students in years 7, 8 and 12. However school will be closed for students in years 9 and 10. We realise that this will be very inconvenient for many families and for that I can only apologise.

"The Induction Day for year 6 students moving to St Laurence will take place as planned.

"Teachers are not making the decision to strike lightly. The dispute is not with St Laurence School. We must hope that the national issues concerned will be resolved very soon."

Clarendon Academy and St Augustine’s Catholic College in Trowbridge will open on July 10.
