A cafe run by Melksham Rotary Club boosted the coffers of Devizes Opportunity Centre by £1,200.

The donation included £200 raised in a collection at the funeral of the club’s president elect Roger Lockett, who died earlier this year.

The retired RAF officer was due to become president of the Rotary Club this July but died after suffering heart problems.

Some of the profits from the Art House café, run by long-term Rotary member Norman Drake, and other fundraising activities also went to the centre.

Mr Drake said: “We have been supporting the opportunity centre for a number of years. It does a lot to help children from the Melksham area.”

In total, the club has raised £16,000 for 17 different charities in the past year.

Betty Newman, manager of Devizes Opportunity Centre, said: “We are very grateful to the Rotary Club.

"A number of our children come from the Melksham area and we are extremely pleased they recognise what we do.”
