SOLDIER Alexander Laird hopes to raise £3,000 by cycling from Whitby to Brighton on the charity Family Activity Breaks’ annual cycle ride, starting on Saturday.

The 50-year-old father of four, who lives in Hackney Way, Westbury, works at the Land Warfare Centre, Warminster, and has been training hard for the week-long ride.

He said: “We are planning to ride 453 miles and every mile represents one of the British soldiers who died in the conflict in Afghanistan.”

Last Sunday he collected £387 for the charity by riding his bike on a static trainer from 10am-4pm at Morrisons supermarket, Warminster.

The charity takes children whose parents have been killed in Afghanistan on activity weekends.
