Pupils from John of Gaunt School in Trow-bridge took part in a flagship sporting event run by Sports Leaders UK and supported by Asda Comm-unity Life on Monday.

The school’s sports day was one of the UK’s first Asda Active Sports Days and saw more than 900 pupils compete in activities including the 100 and 200 metres, long jump, high jump and javelin.

More than 50 local young sports leaders ran the activities on the day, while staff from Asda also provided factual talks to pupils at the school about healthy sports snacks and drinks.

Nicky Phillips, comm-unity life champion at Asda Trowbridge, said: “It was a huge success and everyone had lots of fun.

“The sports leaders did a brilliant job at showing the pupils how to fuel their exercise with healthier snacks and I was thrilled to be able to support them with this.

“Keeping the spirit of 2012 alive in our local community is very important for youngsters and I hope events like this will inspire them to get active, keep healthy, and volunteer themselves in the future.”

The programme comes after Asda Community Life joined forces with nationwide leadership organisation Sports Leaders UK in a three-year partnership aimed at improving the prospects of young people.

Josh Dunbar, head of PE at John of Gaunt School, said: “We always urge the children to eat healthily and to exercise, and these vital messages have been reinforced with the help of Asda Community Life and Sports Leaders UK.”
