Sainsbury's in Chippenham has adopted homeless group Doorway as its charity of the year.

The group, in Foghamshire, works with the homeless to help them with finding jobs, places to live and health.

The store’s scheme is now in its sixth year and gives customers the chance to vote for their favourite local charity to be considered to receive a year’s worth of support from their Sainsbury’s store. The scheme has raised over £6 million to support local charities since 2009.

Last year it raised £3,862.03 for Dorothy House Hospice care.
Customers had a say in deciding which charity to adopt and voted in-store and online between  May and June. Store staff then made the final decision.

Doorway director Lisa Lewis said:  “We are delighted to have been chosen and we are very much looking forward to working in partnership with the store over the next year.

“This is a very exciting way in which we can raise much needed funding to continue our work with those who are homeless or vulnerably housed.”

Store manager Paul Gunter added: “We’ve had a great response from our customers this year, both through in-store and online votes.

“We’re delighted to have chosen a charity which touched many of our colleagues’ hearts. We will now be working closely with the charity to ensure they really benefit from being our local charity for the next 12 months.”
