Westbury boy Tyler Wood, who two years ago underwent a heart transplant but is now glowing with health, will take part in the British Transplant Games today.

Tyler, 11, of Primmers Place, will compete in four events at the games in Bolton, which end on Sunday.

His mum Ali said: “Tyler is like a new boy since he had the transplant. Before he wasn’t that interested in sport but since the operation he has so much more energy and now plays football and enjoys other games much more.”

He has been in training under the watchful eye of his dad David and older brother James, 17, who have taken on the role of coaches.

Mrs Wood said: “Tyler took part in the games last year but this time he is determined to come away with a medal.”

He will be taking part in the obstacle race and ball throw today and the 50 metre run and long jump on Sunday. The whole family travelled to Bolton yesterday ready for the opening ceremony.

Tyler, who has autism, was diagnosed with heart problems two years ago and underwent his transplant at Great Ormond Street Hospital on November 27, 2012.

Mrs Wood, who works at Center Parcs at Longleat, said: “Tyler made an excellent recovery and is now really active.”

As he missed eight months of schooling Tyler will be staying on at Bitham Brook Primary School for an extra year and will return there in September.

Mrs Wood said the games would be a poignant affair as donor families also attend.

Janet Holmes, cardiac and surgical play team leader at Great Ormond Street, said: “We’re thrilled that Tyler will be part of Team GOSH at the 2014 British Transplant Games. The Games are a fantastic celebration of the gift of organ donation, and show just how much transplant patients can go on to achieve.”
