We're giving young people much bigger voice - Wiltshire Council

Wiltshire Council’s Cabinet unanimously voted in May to go ahead with the community model for youth services.

Their vote followed a 10-week consultation period that generated thousands of responses.

The cuts to the youth services budget are saving £250,000.

Laura Mayes, Wiltshire Council cabinet member for children’s services, said: “The aim of the new model for the youth service is to ensure more young people have access to a range of suitable activities.

“We received over 5,000 responses from young people to our consultation. One of the clearest messages received is that young people want a greater say in the services provided for them.

"By delegating decision-making to community areas and ensuring young people have a strong voice on each Local Youth Network to advise the decision-making, the young people will have more, not less, influence than at present.

“Each community area will have a fully qualified Community Youth Officer, who will be the go-to person for young people and everyone who wants to get involved with youth projects.

"For many young people this is a time of change but I’d encourage them to be involved so we can ensure the youth activities are what they enjoy and like to do.”

Can anyone tell me what Conservative Cabinet member Laura Mayes is actually saying?

All we know is that the young people in Trowbridge, Chippenham and Bradford are telling us the Youth Centres are finished and many youth workers have been made redundant. The buildings are going to be disposed of to pay for the refurbished County Hall and hubs in Chippenham and Salisbury.

So where is this great future that Laura Mayes is promising young people?

I would point out to Laura Mayes that 'carrying out surveys' is not an adequate excuse or remedy for taking away the Funding because the Cons-Cab have spent out.....

Captain Dave & Co in the big house on the Thames spend all their time and tax payers money on talking about Services that they have no idea about and...do not care a monkey's bits about.....

Wiltshire Council is expected and required to show that they ask Residents of all ages for their views via 'surveys' but is no good 'surveying' any of us AFTER Wilts Cons-Cab have taken away the Services that tax payers pay for ..

We all have a Right to know WHO at Wilts Council in May 'voted unanimously to go ahead with the community model for youth services'.

The Localism Act gave Councils the power to administer 'locally' and, that will NEVER be done in a transparent and Democratic way as long as Wilts Council is led by the Conservatives..

Ms Mayes is quoting from Government Propeganda
and that in NO way results in Wilts Council doing 'what it says on the Service Provision tin'..

The actual definition of 'delegating decision making to community areas' IS 'we the Cons-Cab at Wilts Council will chat about it in meetings that we get paid huge Allowances and Salaries for but, we are not going to provide the services because we have already spent Government Funding on ourselves"..

Community led Services will NEVER succeed in Wiltshire if the Cons-Cab are allowed to go on spending Government Grant Funding on their own Political projects..

So let me get this right ...

1) we're cutting all your money (so practically no services)
but ..
2) we're give you a 'bigger voice' in how those services are run

Laura Mayes - do you speak english?

Devizes Youth Centre, sorry Leisure centre is empty most of the time. Manager at the leisure centre has to get more people to use it , why not have a youth club! oh dear youth workers made redundant, young people with little to do this winter, Wiltshire Council don't give a dam as young people don't VOTE.

I find it amusing that the conservative government have faith in this model and that Laura is adamant it's going to work. The consultation was a scam where the young people were not listened too. If we do a bigger voice like she claims, why do the Devizes young people have to wait till October for our youth officer. Considering Wiltshire council were prepared to start the new model there organisation skills are appalling.

This is so true, the Bridging Project for young people is still not up and running, it was commissioned to Barnardos , don't see any recruitment yet on their website what about training as the young people that attend the Bridging Project want youth workers not play assistants. yet again the young people with special needs get let down to save money !!!!!!!!!!.
