There was one competitor who stood out from the rest at this year’s Hilperton Village Fruit and Vegetable Show, which took place at Hilperton Village Hall on Sunday.

Cedric Connor wowed the judges with his huge onions, which weighed around four-and-a-half pounds each on average, winning his category with ease from the next best entry at 10oz.

The event, which was taken over by the Friends of Hilperton Allotments last year, is now in its 15th year and also included numerous stalls and a tombola raising money for the village hall.

Melissa Reeves, from Friends of Hilperton Allotments, said: “It was a good turnout and we had a nice sunny day for it. We had lots of visitors and there must have been about 55 entries over the 34 categories.

“The standout entry was definitely Cedric with his onions, which were outstanding. It is unlikely that you would ever see onions like that again at a fruit and vegetable show.

“We had lots of families in attendance and we also saw some new faces thanks to the addition of arts and crafts categories this year. Hopefully it encourages even more people to come next year.”

The show also saw the launch of art project Hedges of Hilperton and Paxcroft Mead, with artist Alex Murdin asking locals to get involved in planting hedgerow plant species in some of the public spaces around the villages.
