Residents of Kitchener’s Court, Trowbridge, are devastated after last night’s torrential downpours resulted in their homes being flooded with sewage.

The fire service were called out to the properties in Kitchener’s Court, just off Hill Street, last night to rescue 89-year-old resident Lucette Powell, as well as other residents who were left stranded in their homes.

The flood water, which was a metre high according to the residents, resulted in the sewers in the court yard of Kitchener’s Court and in Hill Street overflowing.

Tony Powell, whose mum was lifted out of her property by firefighters, said: “This is the second time it’s been flooded out this year, but it is much worse this time around. Mum was carried out by firefighters as the water was at least a metre high.”

The residents in Kitchener’s Court said they were also flooded two months ago when flash floods hit Trowbridge, but this time was far worse, with sewage water covering the floors of their homes.

Sade Coleman, who is in the process of purchasing one of the properties in Kitchener’s Court with her partner, said: “It’s an absolute nightmare. There is human excrement everywhere and the bath is filled up with sewage water.

“It’s just gone everywhere. I have been trying to buy the bungalow for five months and we love the property, but we are reconsidering now as it’s not worth it if it floods like this.”

Many of the residents are now staying with relatives as the properties are uninhabitable due to the flood water damage.

Frances Scott said: “We have contacted Wessex Water, but no one seems to be doing their job and we have just been left in the lurch. My home absolutely stinks and it is disgusting.

“The drains just can’t cope and while Wessex Water are saying that the ones in the court yard are not their responsibility, they could do something about the drains in the street outside.

“I heard the thunder and the rain and looked outside and saw a puddle initially, but within about five minutes the water was building up and getting higher and higher. I was crying as it was dark and it just absolutely reeked.

“It’s much worse than last time and all of my furniture is ruined. It is uninhabitable and what makes it worse is that we are still recovering from when we were flooded two months ago.”
