Great-grandmother Joan Little celebrated her 90th birthday with her identical twin sister last Saturday by returning to the pub their family used to own.

Mrs Little, of College Road in Trowbridge, and her sister, Betty Potter, who lives in Salisbury, moved to the Red Lion in East Chisenbury in 1930 when they were six.

The Red Lion was first run by their father Ernest before it was taken over by their elder brother Bernie, and remained in the family until he retired in 1992.

The surprise celebration was organised by Mrs Little’s daughter Wendy Johnston and her cousins Susan George and Brenda Hutton. Some 80 guests, included relatives from France and Canada.

Mrs Johnston, who lives in Clarendon Road in Trowbridge, said: “She had all of her family there so it was really nice.

“They were really shocked; it was lovely. My mum was just happy to see everybody.

“The pub has been in the family for donkey’s years and we celebrated their 80th in there as well, so it was really good.”

The day was a triple celebration for the family as Mrs Little announced the arrival of her sixth great-grandchild, Olive, born the day before.

Both twins moved to Trowbridge in 1941 to work in the Vickers factory on Bradley Road and did their bit for the war effort by working in the Spitfire factory in the town.

The pair are inseparable and walked down the aisle together at Enford Parish Church on September 3, 1950 to marry Alfie Little and Albert Potter.
