POLICE made six arrests after Jack Daniels and vodka worth £400 were stolen from Sainsbury’s in Chippenham.

A member of the public alerted police when he found several security tags dumped in a bin outside Sainsbury’s at 11am on Friday.

When police attended the Bath Road supermarket, a group of five people were seen running away and leaving in a silver Renault Laguna.

Officers stopped a car in Melksham and arrested two women aged 23 and 26 and three men aged 23, 24 and 53, all from Romania, on suspicion of conspiring to steal.

Police said their warnings to other retailers led to a sixth person, a 38-year-old Romanian man, being arrested on suspicion of theft in Morrisons at 1.30pm.

All suspects have been released on police bail.

Police believe others are still at large.

Sergeant Phil Connor said: “We believe other members of a gang are involved in this organised crime. Please call police on 101.”
