A Chapmanslade man will face the tough questions, dramatic music and the walk to the iconic black chair tonight when he appears on top TV quiz Mastermind.

Bob Monger, 68, of Huntenhull Lane, features in an episode due to be shown at 8pm on BBC1, where he faces tough questions fired by presenter John Humphrys.

The retired teacher is an avid fan of quizzes and decided to test himself on one of the country’s most famous quiz shows, which was recorded last July at Media City in Salford.

“Two things struck me being on the show, one it just goes so fast you wouldn’t believe it,” he said.

“And second, you can revise for your specialist subject but it is really the general knowledge round that separates people.”

For his specialist subject Mr Monger chose KC Sir Edward Marshall Hall, an English barrister famous for successfully defending many people accused of notorious murders in the early 1900s.

In the second round, the 68-year-old attempted to answer general knowledge questions ranging from the name of the man who founded Sikhism to naming a battle between Persian and Greek forces.

Mr Monger is not new to appearing on quiz shows, having made an appearance on the original show Fifteen to One, and is considering a return application after that quiz was re-launched last year.

He said: “I’m not really into gimmicky quiz shows but I might look to go back on Mastermind as well.”
