A club for young sailors which lost most if its equipment after a fire last year has had its coffers swelled by a £421.21 cheque from Westbury Wheelers and Westbury Running Club.

West Wilts Youth Sailing Association will use the money to replace items stolen and lost in a blaze last April which caused more than £100,000 of damage to the club.

The money was raised during an annual Everest Challenge in which cyclists and runners tackle the 1.1 miles up the White Horse a total of 65 times to match Mount Everest’s height.

Commodore of the WWYSA Margaret Pell said: “It was brilliant of Westbury Wheelers and Westbury Running Club. We lost most of our season last year because we lost so much stuff. This money will be spent on rigging and sails which were lost in the fire.”

Mark Welbourn, 55, a Westbury Wheeler, presented the cheque with his sons James, 14, and Oliver, 11, who sail at the club.
