THIEVES took jewellery worth hundreds of pounds when they broke into a house in Halifax Road, Bowerhill, Melksham, on Saturday.

The owner returned at 8.40pm to find two men walking out of her gate. Several pieces of jewellery with sentimental value were missing, including rings and bracelets. The men were aged 18 to 23. One was 6ft and of medium build and the other was 5ft 8ins, with short, dark hair.

Chainsaw were stolen from a barn in Acreshort Lane, Steeple Ashton, on Saturday. Thieves set off an alarm by unscrewing the framework of its container. On Monday, at 11.50pm, residents of Leaze Farm in Mill Lane, Bulkington, were awoken by their dogs barking when thieves damaged a barn attempting to get in, but nothing was stolen.

The problem of drivers congregating at night and playing music in Melksham Market Place will be discussed by the town council on February 16. The council is to ask police to attend and explain how they are handling the problem of anti-social behaviour.

Police want people to be vigilant after a man knocked on the door of a property in Victoria Road, Trowbridge, on Tuesday and said he was from a gas company. When asked for his official ID, the man, described as in his late 20s and wearing dark clothing, left and did not return.

The Hub@BA15 project was given a £3,500 grant towards final preparations for its opening by Bradford on Avon Town Council on Tuesday. Bradford Museum was also given £2,000 for activities later in the year.

Firefighters from Warminster attended Regal Court retirement and sheltered housing on Weymouth Street at 3.30pm on Wednesday after a man got stuck in a lift. He was freed by 4pm.

A chimney fire at Field Close in Westbury was attended by a fire crew at 7pm last Friday. The fire was doused using a stirrup pump and chimney rods, before firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to check it over.
