A DJ with learning disabilities has been invited to BBC Radio 2’s Folk Awards after spending at day at their studio in Salford.

Sebastian Beaman, 34, who lives in Chippenham, hosts Gentle Folk on Chippenham FM and dreams of working for the BBC.

He is supported by national learning disability and autism support provider Dimensions, which wrote to Mark Radcliffe and told him about Mr Beaman’s passion for folk music.

As a result he got to meet the broadcaster and watch Bella Hardy perform live on The Folk Show. He was given a tour of the studio and offered tickets to the awards in Cardiff in April.

Mr Beaman said: “The tour was very good and I got to watch the radio show. Mark and Bella were really friendly and answered all my questions. I really enjoyed myself and I’m excited about the awards.”

Helen Orford, operations director for Dimensions West region, said:“Sebastian is already a step towards his dream after securing a regular slot as a DJ and now he’s seen what it’s like at a national radio station.

“We’re very proud of what Sebastian has achieved so far. He’s a very ambitious person and we’ll continue to work with him to help him achieve his ambition of becoming a professional radio DJ.”

His show can be heard at www.chippenhamfm.com on Tuesdays, from 7pm to 8pm.
