FITZMAURICE Primary School unveiled their new library last week to the delight of pupils who took part in a day of book-themed activities to mark the occasion.

The project, which has been in the making for over a year, was a joint effort between the school and Fitzmaurice School Association who have put on a series of fundraising events to come up with a few thousand pounds for the new facilities.

Head teacher Tracey Dunn said that the staff and children came dressed as a book character on the day and pupils were even treated to a character-themed lunch.

She added: “The effort that the children and parents went to was absolutely superb and the enthusiasm that the children had for reading was brilliant.”

Children from Year 5 and 6 have been appointed as librarians and they will now take over charge of searching for books on the system as well as loaning them out to fellow pupils.

Mrs Dunn said in the run up to its opening, there were a group of parents who were heavily involved in sourcing ideas and planning, painting as well as scanning and barcoding the books.

Peter Waterman, a librarian from Bradford on Avon library, cut the ribbon on the day.

The school now hopes Fitzmaurice parents will join in on the fun and offer to a book to a group of children. For more information, contact your child’s class teacher.
