BATTLE of the Melksham building merchants in a charity football match ended with a 4-2 victory to Travis Perkins on Sunday.

Going head-to-head against rivals Buildbase, the two companies dusted off their football boots to try and claim victory while raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support at the same time.

Before the match, organiser and branch manager of Travis Perkins in Melksham, Robbie Newton said he wouldn’t live it down if his team lost, but luckily they were on top form and walked away winners.

“It was the right result,” Mr Newton joked, “But it was pretty close, there wasn’t an awful lot between the two teams.”

They had hoped to raise £500 but with money still to count, they are track to smashing their target with a total of £2,000.

The match took place at The Conigre and excited crowds turned out to see the two teams compete. There was also a cake sale, raffle and face painting for youngsters to enjoy.

“It was absolutely packed," Mr Newton said, "We were initially worried because of the weather but it was perfect and it was a brilliant day."

He added: “We’ve got the trophy proudly at the branch for everyone to see.”
