A WILTSHIRE College assessor who used to look after the four-year-killed girl in the Bath tipper truck tragedy has helped raise more than £2,000 for the charity chosen by her parents in her memory.

Kirsty Galliers and her friend Katie Fisher previously taught Mitzi Steady at a nursery in the city and wanted to offer their support by hosting a quiz and raffle night.

The event, which took place at The White Horse Country Park in Westbury, was a big success with 120 people attending and a total of £2,119 being raised for Brake – a national road safety charity which aims to prevent road casualties.

Mitzi and three men died after they were hit by a 32-tonne tipper truck in Bath in February. Following the tragedy, Mitzi’s parents set up a fundraising page and within hours of being launched its target had been tripled.

Mrs Galliers, 26, from Westbury, who re-joined Wiltshire College as a childcare trainer and assessor in January, said she had been overwhelmed with the support and donations from the event.

“We wanted to hold a quiz and raffle because we knew Mitzi and many of the children that we sent off to school from nursery attended the school where the accident happened,” she said.

“Katie’s dad Brian Fisher and his good friend Karl Morgan were also at the scene of the accident and did everything they could to help all those involved.

“We initially aimed to raise £50 so to raise more than £2,000 was really fantastic. It was a very emotional evening, especially as we said a big thank you to Brian and Karl for all their efforts and for helping us to sell raffle squares.”

Mrs Galliers’ sister-in-law Hayley, friend Maya and brother also contributed to the cause by completing a bike ride from Bath to Trowbridge and she is now hoping that colleagues from Wiltshire College may help their total raise even further.

Anyone who would like to donate can do so through charity buckets available in reception at the Trowbridge and Lackham campuses.
