EYE witnesses have relived the chaotic scenes after a car ploughed into shoppers outside Lidl in Warminster on Saturday, in which two people suffered serious injuries.

Dozens of people were left shocked by the incident that happened at midday when a green Peugeot 206 collided with pedestrians at the front of the Lidl store on Station Road.

Emergency services including the Great Western Air Ambulance, fire crews and police attended the scene, where a 56-year-old woman from Lincolnshire was trapped between the car and bollards.

She was flown by air ambulance to Southmead Hospital, in Bristol, with potentially life-changing injuries.

Watch manager of Warminster Fire Station Chris Trimby, said: “When we got to the scene there was a woman trapped against the car and crash barriers who was being treated by medical personnel.

“The shop was busy as you’d expect but pretty early on we cordoned off the area and decided along with the paramedics to winch the car out of the way so to create more space for them to work.

“Then from there we moved the crash barriers out of the way and really just assisted the paramedics in getting the lady onto a stretcher.

“As far as I know she suffered a broken femur and pelvic injuries and they were worried about a pre-existing back injury.”

A 71 year-old-man, from Warminster, also suffered potentially life changing injuries and was taken by road ambulance to the Royal United Hospital, in Bath.

Mr Brady, manager of the nearby B&M Home Store on Fairfield Road, said: “It was quite manic as there were a lot of ambulance and police around.

“They put the barrier around the woman trapped under the car so we couldn’t see what was happening but it did look bad and she was probably there for 45 minutes.

“I was speaking to a paramedic and they said she was going to have life changing injuries and she may not be able to walk again.

“There’s shock around the area, people have been speaking about it but I think it’s more a case of people trying to understand how it happened as we’re still not 100 per cent sure.

“It has been awful though and I do feel sorry for the families.”

A 14-year-old girl from Westbury was also treated for minor injuries at the scene as was a man.

It's believed the woman car driver, from Salisbury, was uninjured.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
