BRADFORD on Avon cyclist Claire Martino has completed a 750 mile charity cycle ride in aid of raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Ms Martino, 52 of Downs View began the challenging 10-day journey from Land’s End in Cornwall last weekend.

And, along with her work colleague John Hines from Taunton and friends Katie and Kelvin Owen, they completed the ride to John O’Groats on Tuesday.

Ms Martino, who works as an account manager at GE Healthcare, said she was forced to take two days out of the cycle due to tiredness but is glad she managed to finish.

“It went really well but it was really long days and we were constantly eating and drinking as you have keep yourself hydrated and fuelled to carry on.”

“This was nothing like I have ever done before and we were cycling for nearly 16 hours a day.”

The group chose to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society after Mr Hines dad died from the condition. Within days of setting off on the 100-mile a day trip, the group managed to raise over 75 per cent of their fundraising total of £2,000.

Ms Martino said: “The whole idea came from John saying that we should do a charity cycle and I said I would be up for it as I was doing quite a lot of cycling last year. Alzheimer’s Society is a really worthwhile cause and the whole cycle was a bit of an adventure really.”

It is back to work for the group on Monday and Ms Martino said she hopes her body will be recovered by then.

“I think for me my legs were the most painful thing and your bum gets numb from the saddle but the great thing about it is that you get to see the whole country. We cycled over the Pennines and it is absolutely beautiful and from a car you wouldn’t be able to see it like that,” she added.
