KEEN golver Mike Goodwin has tackled the challenge of playing four rounds of golf in a day for Macmillan Cancer Support, raising more than £800 for the charity.

When Mr Goodwin received an email from Golf Monthly asking him to sign up for the Macmillan Golf Challenge although initially quite daunted, he was very keen to have a go and invited his playing partners to join him.

Mr Goodwin supports Macmillan not least because both he and his wife have been treated for cancer, a disease which also claimed the lives of both his wife’s parents and his father.

With the support of Chippenham Golf Club, which provided two buggies, Mr Goodwin and his golfing buddies set off at dawn on June 23 and eventually came in after four rounds of golf exhausted but with much-needed cash for Macmillan.

Derek McGinley also has personal experience of the outstanding work done by Macmillan nurses as they supported his family during his father's last days.

Steve Goodrick, Macmillan’s fundraising manager for Wiltshire, said: "Believe me this is not an easy challenge, we are indeed very grateful to Mike and his good friends and supporters who have raised a quite significant sum - £800 will go a long way to support people in the community affected by cancer.

"Thank you so very much Mike."
