MORE than 60 tonnes of hay went up in smoke at the weekend after a fire at a farm in Upton Scudamore.
Fire crews were called out to the blaze at 7.15pm on Saturday at Field Barn on Farnicombe Farm.
Four crews from Melksham, Frome, Warminster and Trowbridge, along with the Wilton water tank carrier, attended with the fire taking several hours to extinguish completely.
Speaking at the time of the fire, crew manager from Warminster Bob Burt said: “At this stage we don’t know the cause of the fire but we took control of the fire as soon as we arrived within seven minutes of the call.
"We are currently doing water relays and are having to wear masks and breathing equipment as there is asbestos involved.
“The barn which the hay was housed in has been completely destroyed and the owner has had to move machinery from a nearby building to avoid them getting damaged.
“We’ll be here all night keeping a watching vigil.”
