WILTSHIRE Police have renewed an appeal for witnesses to a crash in which a 97-year-old woman died and three other people were seriously injured.

The incident happened just after 2am on the M4 eastbound between junction 15 Swindon East and junction 14 Hungerford near to the Membury Services.

A Vauxhall Zafira was travelling east when it struck the barrier and came to rest in the centre lane. The stationary vehicle was then in collision with an Audi A4, also travelling east.

A 97-year-old woman, who was the front seat passenger in the Audi, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her son-in-law, a 60-year-old man from South East London, was driving the Audi. He sustained life threatening injuries and was taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

He sustained serious head injuries, plus multiple fractures to his spine, pelvis and legs.

He has since been transferred to Southmead Hospital in Bristol and is said to be in a critical condition today.

The 59-year-old female back-seat passenger of the Audi, who is the daughter of the deceased and the wife of the driver, was seriously injured.

She was taken to the GWH and is today said to be in a stable condition.

The Zafira driver, a 26-year-old man from West London, sustained life changing leg injuries and was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

The M4 was closed for six hours whilst an investigation was carried out by the Tri Force Specialist Operations Roads Policing Unit.

PC George Rabczak said: “We are keen to hear from anyone travelling between junctions 15 and 14 who witnessed the collision which sadly led to the death of an elderly lady and left three people with serious injuries.”

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to call Wiltshire Police on 101 and ask for PC Rabczak.
