PUPILS at St George’s Primary at Semington can now hop, skip and jump along their new 'toepath' after raising over £11,000 for its installation.

The path was opened on Friday by the oldest ex-pupil living in Semington, Sylvia Nash, 91, and Lola, the youngest pupil.

The £11,600 project was started by Gordon Campbell, who has been head at St George’s for just over a year.

He said: “I noticed soon that during the wetter months the children were restricted to the small hard standing playground, and the grass field area was inaccessible due to muddy conditions.

“Children already benefit from the space this opens up. They are using the new cabins and trim trail, and are able to access the picnic tables and quiet area all year round.

"A less crowded, more open playtime means children return to the classroom better refreshed and ready for lessons.”

The path, created by Different by Design, is around the existing field and includes new and existing play equipment.

Andrea Webb, of the Friends of St George’s, added: “We are grateful to people who ran the 10k and attended the jumble sale and village fete.”

It is hoped that the play equipment can be expanded in the near future to give the children further opportunities for outdoor play and learning.
