THE British Red Cross has launched a new emergency app that will enable people to look after their friends and family from afar.

The app will allow people to deliver real-time alerts for severe weather and other potential threats around the UK at the touch of a button.

Providing practical information on what to do next in a range of emergencies including flooding, power outages and even terror threats, the app is available on Android, iPad and iPhone.

Simon Lewis, head of emergency response for the British Red Cross, said: “Many don’t realise the impact severe weather can have, until it’s too late. It is important that we provide communities and individuals with tools and information as part of our Get Ready for winter campaign, to help reduce vulnerability, not just for themselves but for their loved ones too."

Aviva, the UK insurer, is supporting the Red Cross with the launch of the Emergency app.

In addition to the app, the British Red Cross has also drafted its winter tips for people on how to plan and prepare for severe weather at home.
