A MUM and daughter took part in a national danceathon in Trowbridge to raise money for Children In Need on Sunday.

The Morphew School of Dance put on the event, at The Old Wool Store, Polebarn Road, as part of the National Performance Project in which thousands of tap dancing schools across the UK danced simultaneously to Uptown Funk for eight minutes.

In the danceathon, set-up by Gill Dobroczynski, the school's principal and teacher Kate Cummings, 67 dancers managed to raise £200 through donations for rehearsals and cake sales.

Pippa Birch, 40, the mother of Daisy Birch, eight, said: “It was lovely but I think my daughter was a bit embarrassed. It was great to do something with my daughter. I run my own business, and I am a busy mum so it was nice to do something like that with her.

"I would do it again. We really enjoyed planning it. I think the teachers that taught us to dance put in a lot of effort as well as the normal lessons. They had to wait for a text message to come through before we could dance."

The event started at 12pm with parents organising the cake sale as the dancers went through several rehearsals before the final performance at 1pm, with each participant receiving a certificate at the end.

Ms Birch, of Hollis Way, Southwick, added: "There was a granny and a daughter and a granddaughter also performing. It was really amazing. It was a great way to raise money and do something different at the weekend.

"We all got nervous, it was quite a big deal. It is a performance at the end of the day and some of us had not been tap dancing for that long."

This year's Children In Need broke its own fundraising record with £37 million collected beating the £32.6 million raised the previous year.
