THE weather was again the only winner at the weekend as all bar two teams from the Shoestrings Chargrill-sponsored Chippenham & District Sunday League suffered disappointment.

The only match that beat the weather was in Division Two where FC Bradford beat basement side Christian Malford 5-0.

On a very heavy pitch at Steeple Ashton, it was Bradford who handled the conditions better to take the points from a Malford side who had not played since early December.

Malford were soon under pressure.

Ashley Styles took advantage of their failure to clear a corner and gave Bradford the lead after just five minutes.

Bradford’s second goal after 18 minutes was a little lucky as James Kellam’s shot from wide left hit one post before spinning across the goal line, hitting the other post and going in to give them a 2-0 lead.

As the pitch deteriorated both teams struggled particularly down the middle.

After 33 minutes Bradford extended their lead. A good stop by Malford keeper Jason Frayling saw Harry Hamlin react quickest as he prodded the ball home to give Bradford a 3-0 lead.

Malford started the second half much brighter and Bradford keeper Morgan Williams had to make a good save low to his left to keep out Eddie Stephenson’s low shot.

He also came out bravely to block Ashley Fletcher when through on goal.

The pitch began to take a toll particularly on Malford who as the game went on clearly tired.

In the 80th minute Bradford extended their lead as substitute Mark Maquire fired home to give them a 4-0 lead.

Bradford’s fifth goal in the 83rd minute owed more to the skill of Ashley Styles than Malford’s tiredness as he beat four defenders before firing low past the keeper for his second goal of the game.

Oderico Rossi refereed well in difficult conditions.
