WESTBURY Town Councillor Ian Taylor’s proposal for a parish council for Westbury Leigh (Wiltshire Times January 29) makes reference to Westbury Leigh Community Project Ltd (WLCP) and its role in running the car park in Westbury Leigh.
As Chairman of the Trustees of WLCP, I wish to disassociate WLCP from Cllr Taylor’s proposal, which he has made in a personal capacity only. WLCP is the registered charity which runs Westbury Leigh Community Hall. It is currently in negotiation with Wiltshire Council to undertake the community asset transfer of the community car park in Westbury Leigh, as Wiltshire Council does not consider this a strategic asset.
To justify his proposal, Cllr Taylor has raised spurious concerns about WLCP’s financial competence by suggesting that it may not be able to afford to run the car park. This is scaremongering and causes WLCP reputational harm.
I would like to assure Westbury Leigh residents that WLCP is committed to maintaining the car park for the long term for the benefit of the Westbury Leigh community. This is independent of whether there is a parish council or not.
Bill Clark, Chairman of Trustees, Westbury Leigh Community Project Ltd, Westbury Leigh, Westbury, BA13 3SF
