Sugar banned from Apprentice contest

Pupils take part in the Apprentice competition Pupils take part in the Apprentice competition

THE Apprentice came to a Trowbridge primary school on Friday, the only difference -no sugar, Sir or otherwise, was allowed.

As part of Grove Primary School's healthy living week pupils took part in an apprentice style competition. Children were put into teams and had design a healthy snack that would be tasty and sell, sell, sell.

Pupils had to research marketing strategies and recipes.

Stalls were set up in the playground, with pupils fighting for the best patch, and the team with the most cash and best marketing was hired.

Snacks included cookies, biscuits and fizzy jelly.

When the snacks ran out entrepreneurial pupils started selling their posters and packaging.

Jonathan Cook, deputy headmaster, said: "I think Alan Sugar would be proud. It was a really good team activity. The main thing is pupils had to think about what went into the snacks."

Teams that made the most profit had to pitch to the school in a boardroom scenario with Mr Cook as Sir Alan Sugar and two other teachers as his assistants.

Smart Lolly, a team of year five pupils, were hired for their unique marketing skills and original idea of smiley faced cookies on a stick.

Alastair Ponsford, headteacher, said: "We used the idea of The Apprentice to inspire children to make, sell and promote healthy food."
