HUNDREDS of Scouts across Wiltshire took the streets of Westbury to celebrate St George's Day with a parade, service and activities on Sunday afternoon.

The West Wiltshire District Scouts were flanked by Beavers, Cubs and Explorers from the town as well as Mere, Warminster, Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Melksham and Southwick.

The day, which ended in a service at All Saints Church, also celebrated the 30th anniversary of Beavers and 100 years of Cubs on top of presenting former president Cyril Full with a flag for his many years of service.

"It was a tremendous day out for everyone involved. The weather was good, despite what the forecasts said, and it was a great occasion and atmosphere. The kids had a great time - we did Westbury proud for sure," said Assistant Beaver Scout Leader Dianne Perrett.

After the parade the Beavers and cubs did a scrapheap challenge and made biscuits whilst the Scouts and Explorers collected road names as part of a competition to make up scrabble words.

A collection was held with the groups raising £75 for All Saints Church and another £75 for Warminster Foodbank Crosspoint.

"This is one of the highlights of the year and was great to see a pretty impressive turnout as well to watch it all. I would also like to say a big thank you to Westbury's Hire Standards Tool Hire for supplying us with signs for all the road closures. We really appreciate their help for helping the event carry on smoothly," added Mrs Perrett.

Long-serving Scouts were also in attendance providing their support and experienced battlefield guide and history lecturer, Tony Coutts-Britton, gave a speech about the importance of standing up for people who cannot stand up for themselves.

To finish Reverend Sue Miles led the service at the Westbury church.
