Kiss of the Spider Woman

Until Saturday June 9, Bristol Old Vic.

The Donmar Warehouse returns to Bristol Old Vic with its moving production of Kiss of the Spider Woman, an intricate and powerful portrayal of two men who are forced to share a cell in a Latin American jail.

One is a young Marxist rebel punished for his ideals, the other a romantic fantasist condemned for his sexuality.

Through the glamorous world of the movies, an unlikely relationship is formed that offers both men the hope of survival.

Argentinian playwright, screenwriter and novelist Manuel Puig (1932-1990) lived in exile most of his life. Among his best known works are the novels Betrayed by Rita Hayworth, Heartbreak Tango and Kiss of the Spider Woman, which was made into a film by Héctor Babenco and later into a play and Broadway musical. The Donmar's performance has been translated by Allan Baker.

Rupert Evans plays Valentin. His theatre credits include Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and King John (RSC), for television, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Fingersmith, North and South, Rockface, Sons and Lovers and Paradise Heights; and for film, Guantanemero and Hellboy.

Will Keen plays Molina. Keen's theatre work includes The Changeling, Tom and Viv, Five Gold Rings (Almeida Theatre), The Rubenstein Kiss (Hampstead Theatre), and Don Juan (Theatre Royal Bath). For television, his credits include Elizabeth I, The Impressionists, Into the Void, Murphy's Law, Monsignor Renard and Martin Chuzzlewit; and for film, Love and Other Disasters and Nine Lives of Thomas Katz.
