Organisers of Glastonbury Festival have urged people planning to arrive by car or caravan to stay away from the site until the queues have cleared.

Current wet weather and ground conditions are causing delays to festivalgoers in Somerset but organisers have said they are "doing everything we can to deal with the situation."

An accident on the A303 near Countess Roundabout involving 4 vehicles has added to the congestion and the road has since been closed.

In their latest statement released at 10.30am, a spokesperson from Glastonbury said: "The current wet weather and ground conditions are still causing heavy traffic congestion around the Glastonbury Festival Site. But we're pleased to report that the picture is improving.

"Our advice to those yet to set off by car/campervan is still to remain where you are for the time being, please. Because of the reduction in traffic approaching the area, queues are not currently getting worse and traffic is making it onto the site.

"If you have set off and have yet to reach the sie, there is no need to rush. Take your time and stop off. The longer you leave it the less you will have to queue. Remember the Festival's entertainment doe not begin until Friday. Gates are open, but there is plenty of capacity in the camping areas.

"If you are coming to the Festival by coach or train, please set off as planned. But please be prepared for your journey to take longer than usual.

"A temporary campervan/caravan holding site has been set up at Bath & West. Please follow signposts to Drop & Collect."

Avon & Somerset Police have echoed Glastonbury Festivals statement, advising drivers to avoid the area if possible and for festivalgoers to delay their journey as long as possible and to remain in their cars at all times.
