JARED McDonald’s fine century gave Westbury the platform to go on and secure a 45-run success over Malmesbury in a rain-affected game.

The hosts were asked to bat first after Malmesbury won the toss and it was a decision the visitors soon regretted.

McDonald and Richard Mills shared an opening-wicket stand of 53 before the latter was run out by Jack Ward for 32.

Running between the stumps proved to be an issue again as Daniel Gibb was run out by George Royle for a run-a-ball 24 with the score on Nelson – 111.

However, that brought McDonald and Dan Gill together and the pair put on a third-wicket stand of 141 before the latter was out for 71 without recording any boundaries to leave Westbury on 253-3.

That soon became 256-4 as McDonald was dismissed for 112, before the hosts closed on 268-5 following a rain interval.

Malmesbury then set about chasing the total but Westbury were in no mood to allow their visitors an easy ride as they quickly made inroads.

Richard Oakley picked up two quick wickets as he trapped Royle and Michael Collison leg before wicket, with both men on two, leaving the visitors reeling at 6-2.

Ewen Kenny and opener James Gillespie gave the visitors some brief respite, but the former was removed by Alex Senneck for 12.

Gillespie (16 not out) found some more support from James Pearce-Smith as the pair shared a fourth-wicket stand of 37 before Senneck picked up his second wicket to dismiss the number five batsmen for 25.

Tom Lucas picked up the final wicket before the rain came with Malmesbury 73-5 off 21.4 overs.

With no further play possible, Duckworth/Lewis deemed that the visitors needed to be on 118 to win.

Trowbridge saw their bid to extend their lead at the summit thwarted by the weather against Purton at the County Ground.

Visitors Purton had reached 144-5 before the rain prevented any further play.
