SIXTY tonnes of hay has gone up in smoke after it's believed it was deliberately set on fire by children in Westbury.

The incident happened at 12.15pm today on land between Bratton Road and Lower Bratton Road.

A fire crew from Westbury and Trowbridge attended and used a hose reel jet and beaters, with the crew from Trowbridge still in attendance.

PCSO Mat Katsande said: “We are currently investigating reports that two youths, aged approximately 15 years old were seen running from the area around the time of the blaze, in the direction of Westbury Road.

“During the school holidays it is important that parents are aware of their children’s whereabouts.

“Please also talk to your children about the dangers of starting fires or playing in derelict buildings – fortunately, nobody was injured during this incident, but fires can very quickly get out of hand and could cause a huge amount of damage.

“If you are a parent or guardian, please make sure your children are aware of the potential risks and ensure you know where they are when out and about.”

Anyone with information should call PC Steve Porter at Warminster Police Station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
