DOUBLE Olympic silver medalist Jazz Carlin unveiled a commemorative plaque in Bradford on Avon to honour her achievements at the Rio Olympics last Thursday.

The Bradford on Avon resident, wearing her two silver medals, was joined by around 100 feverishly excited members of the public to officially open the new 'Carlin Steps' on the steps up to the McKeever bridge.

The 25-year-old, who came second in the 400m and the 800m freestyle, worked the crowd like a professional at the evening ceremony, taking photos with the 1st Bradford on Avon Brownies group, the Rainbows group and the town council among others.

"I just want to thank everyone for coming, this is such an privilege to be here and to receive this wonderful gift," she said.

"I used to race in the town pool when I was younger. It took me a lot of work to get where I am now and who knows we could see some future stars being born from the town in years to come.

"To see so many little faces smiling up at you and people saying such lovely things makes me feel very honoured and fortunate.

"I love living in Bradford. As often as I can I spend weekends here as it is such a beautiful town and for the town to reward me in such a way is very special."

Despite the Olympics finishing nearly a month ago, Ms Carlin, who had her London 2012 dreams scuppered by getting glandular fever, is still riding on a wave of euphoria.

"It has been an absolute whirlwind really. It meant so much to win these medals at Rio after the disappointment of not taking part four years ago, but to come back to this is amazing," she added.

All of this, including putting up a banner in Westbury Gardens of Ms Carlin, who trains at Bath University, was arranged by the town council.

Mayor Alison Craddock said: “The town is very proud of Jazz and what she has achieved. We are thrilled for her."

The unveiling was followed by a food and drinks reception in Westbury Gardens.

MP Michelle Donelan, who was also in attendance, said: "What she has achieved is unbelievable. For the town it is just fantastic, everyone is so proud of her and rightly so.

"This ceremony shows how the town see her as an inspiration and what is great about this is that if you work hard, your dreams and goals can come true."
